In Tennessee, Interstate 81 starts  at the  Virginia state line and travels southwest until it connects with Interstate 40.   I81 is a critical thoroughfare for the State of Tennessee and the Tri-Cities, carrying  local traffic and traffic from Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland through North East Tennessee.
